The first week of May is a special time for the University of Iowa’s Department of Theatre Arts, as its students and faculty mount their annual Iowa New Play Festival.
The 2021 festival will be presented virtually, beginning this afternoon and continuing through Sunday, May 9. All presentations are free and open to the public.
The first reading, “Gwenevere,” by Isaiah Reaves, tells the tale of A Black family turned upside down when an antique doll named Gwenevere is rediscovered in the attic. Eric and Raquel confront their own biases about masculinity and race as their young son begins to play with the doll, but no one suspects that Gwenevere is much more than just a doll.
