If you’ve been in Iowa City for some years you may have met Craig Willis, a local resident and treasure who has had a long career in law. Aside from this career with his spouse, he has been a contributor to the community in many ways. Now as a retiree, he has turned his talents to writing and has chosen mystery as his genre.
Join Craig on Zoom for a reading and chat session about his murder mystery, The Deadly Mondaine, which traces the life of central character Hattie Rosales.
Hattie is first presented to the reader as a more-or-less-ordinary 84-year-old resident of Shady Rest retirement home in the fictional town of Gethsemane, Illinois. However, she’s also a former hitwoman who doesn’t actually need the wheeled walker she uses. (Intrigued yet?)
At the outset, Hattie is disaffected and is particularly frustrated with her inability to get the attention of her successful fashion publication-editor daughter, Ines Rosales, in order to tell her of the source of the funds used for her education. For reasons sufficiently pressing to Hattie, she dispatches two of the Shady Rest residents and various other mysteries ensue.
Kirkus Reviews says, “Intriguing and refreshing female characters enliven this mystery tale.”
This presentation is part of TRAIL’s new “Iowa City Authors Share” series, co-sponsored by the Iowa City-Johnson County Senior Center.
