Local historian Tom Schulein is back to revisit some of his favorite topics in this popular series from the Iowa City-Johnson County Senior Center. Here’s the line-up (all events begin at 11 AM):
April 6: 10 Block of South Clinton Street
Take a trip down memory lane as this historic block in the heart of downtown Iowa City is explored, past and present. Whetstone Drug, The Airliner, Seiferts, Iowa Book and Supply, Land’s End, Shorts Burger and Shine, and numerous other businesses will be examined.
April 13: The Lustron Steel Home
Learn how, in the 1940s, a man turned his idea to produce steel commercial structures into a plan to produce steel HOMES. Find out what happened, including the building of seven of these homes in the Iowa City area.
April 20: How East Iowa City Came to Be
In the late 1890s, a man had a vision for a factory and a factory town east of the city limits of Iowa City. Learn how he began the development of this area that later became an integral part of Iowa City and about his struggles to get his area settled.
April 27: The History of Hickory Hill Park
Many Iowa Citians consider Hickory Hill Park a real treasure. It offers an escape to solitude and nature at our very doorstep. How was so much land found for this park? Has its area increased over the years? To understand Hickory Hill Park, we must understand Oakland Cemetery and Regina High School. Learn about the history of the park along with some associated controversies.
