TRAIL member Linda McGuire’s presentation comes about after one of our TRAIL Collections sharing times on Zoom. She showed us her books and we were all captivated and wanted to know more. Here is how she describes what she plans to share with us during this presentation:
“Three-and-a-half linear feet of our home bookshelves is taken up with non-fiction works that span almost every imaginable type of natural disaster, and a few non-natural disasters that have slipped in. In this talk, I’ll introduce you to the collection, some of my favorites, and how and why they fascinate me.”
Linda was born and raised in Brooklyn and Long Island, New York, and transplanted to Iowa City in 1974. She retired five years ago after a career in higher and legal education, law practice and legal reform, and women’s and civil rights. Since retirement, she has been amazed at how much time can be spent seemingly doing nothing much of consequence. She plays at art with watercolor paints, gardens, and enjoys all things food: growing, reading, procuring, and cooking. Linda and her spouse Anne Burnside have a 40-acre property with prairie remnants in Davis County that they call “Red Top Farm,” and they rent out a cottage that received a 2017 Historic Preservation Award that is next door to their Iowa City home. East Coast families, friends, and shores still beckon, and Linda looks forward to post-COVID life and resuming travel there and elsewhere.
