Temari, embroidered and wrapped thread balls, have been part of Japanese culture since the 14th century. From their origin as toys for little princesses, they evolved into cherished gifts for special occasions with many considered small works of art. This class will provide a short history of temari, a demonstration of how to wrap the temari ball, and the opportunity to stitch temari. Working with a pre-wrapped ball, participants will learn and practice decorative wrapping and herringbone stitching to create a temari in the colorway of their choice. Our teacher is Betty Huttner, who has been engaged in various types of fiber art most of her life and has been exploring the art of Japanese temari over the past few years. Please bring with you: sharp embroidery scissors, pencil, magnifier, and lamp (if routinely used for close work). The $20 class fee includes how-to booklet, needles, thread, and pre-wrapped temari.
