About this event

The State Historical Society of Iowa invites you to join historian David Connon for a fascinating look at Iowans whose decisions during the Civil War had surprising and sometimes unintended consequences.

Discover the unexpected ways some Iowans supported the Confederate war effort and explore the political tensions, divided loyalties, and emotional realities that shaped life in Iowa during wartime. This Iowa History 101 offers a look at the complicated choices Iowans faced during one of the most turbulent periods in American history.

David Connon has spent nearly two decades researching dissenters in Iowa: Grinnell residents who helped on the Underground Railroad and their polar opposites, Iowa Confederates. He shares some of these stories with audiences across the state through the Humanities Iowa Speakers Bureau. He has worked as an interpreter at Living History Farms for ten seasons. Connon is a member of Sons of Union Veterans, an associate member of Sons of Confederate Veterans, and a member of the Des Moines Civil War Round Table.

All Iowa History 101 webinars are recorded and placed on the Iowa History YouTube page. Even if you cannot attend live, please register to receive a follow-up email after the program. The email will contain the recording link and additional resources to further explore the topic.
