Identifying with the characters in a book can be so much easier if you share the same point of reference. While not all of today’s fiction is written with 30-something characters, it is often difficult for readers over age 50 to find protagonists of the same vintage – especially when library catalogs use subjects like “Older People Fiction” (which is what the Iowa City Public Library uses!).
Here are a few lists from sources on the web that talk about older protagonists: Modern Mrs Darcy, Goodreads, So She Reads, and BookBub.
Gather some of your favorites and join the ICPL staff for a lively discussion.
Not a traditional book group, Let's Talk Books is a series of casual online conversations about books. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month on Zoom to talk about favorite books in a specific genre or on a theme that changes each time. Each participant brings a few titles to share, and by the end of the discussion, all have a few new titles on their to-be-read lists.
Register in advance and you'll receive a confirmation email with the Zoom login details. You'll also get a reminder email a few days before the event. Everyone is welcome!
