The Iowa City Senior Center invites you to enjoy a discussion with local author Marybeth Slonneger and local activist Dianna Penny about their newly released book, Penny's Hill: A Family Story About an Escape from Slavery, Unease in East Central Iowa Before the Civil War, and Eventual Arrival of the Penny Family to Iowa City.

 

Dianna and Marybeth will trace the history of the Penny family, from Henry Penny’s miraculous escape from slavery to his grandson Fred Penny's 36-year ministerial position at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Iowa City from 1958-1994.
