Cinema Salon is a monthly program sponsored by the Iowa City Senior Center that invites Center members and other movie lovers to view a discounted screening of a new release film at FilmScene, followed by a 30-minute discussion facilitated by Frank Murray.
Today’s film is Father Mother Sister Brother. Funny, tender and astutely observed, this intimate exploration of the universal intricacies of family dynamics is told in the form of a triptych divided into chapters set in New Jersey, Dublin, and Paris. Each story concerns the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Blending remarkable performances from its ensemble cast with director Jim Jarmusch’s (Only Lovers Left Alive) wry and idiosyncratic observations of everyday life, the iconic indie director’s latest serves as a timely reminder that you can choose your friends and your lovers, but you can’t choose your family. Frank Murray has his Ph.D. from Stanford and 45 years of teaching literature, film, and philosophy. He enjoys examining the methods a film uses to convey meaning and to listen to what others see and understand about the film. Films are announced about two weeks in advance.
