About this event

Join presenter Roy Sucholeiki, author of "The Sand Art Bottles of Andrew Clemens," to learn more about this remarkable artist (1857-1894), who created sand art in bottles that drew reactions of astonishment and disbelief.
Deaf by the age of six, Andrew had a challenging early childhood. Growing up in a supportive family and community, he persevered. In his youth, he began creating sand art that he sold from his home and local shops in McGregor, Iowa, a booming town in the late 19th century.
In time, Andrew developed his craft to an extraordinarily high degree using simple tools to carefully position grains of naturally colored sand inside glass bottles. His works were an inspiration to other artists that tried to follow in his footsteps only to find they could not match the master of the craft. His remarkable story along with dozens of photos of his works will be presented and discussed during this program.
The Iowa History 101 webinars share Iowa stories and the history of the state through a cultural history lens on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Registration is required for each event and to receive a link to the recorded program.
