Community Ofrenda (Altar De Muertos) and Tamalada
About this event

Día de los Muertos, a holiday with roots in pre-Columbian – particularly Aztec – culture, is celebrated today primarily in Mexico and parts of Central America, such as Guatemala and El Salvador.
Similar traditions exist in other countries like the Philippines, where it is celebrated as Undás, and in other parts of Latin America with varying influences.
The community ofrenda at the Iowa City Public Library is an offering showcasing a remembrance of those no longer with us. We celebrate their lives and commemorate their spirit through candles, their favorite foods, flowers, and photographs.
Today’s event is the culmination of community efforts and their contributions. The ofrenda will be on the second floor this year. Staff and volunteers will be working on this project all day from 2-6 PM, and the public is invited to drop in at any time
Traditional food and music will be offered; the tamalada (a gathering where tamales are served) will begin around 5:30. Feel free to bring a photo for the altar or just an extra pair of hands!
