Our Water, Our Future: A Look at the Central Iowa Water Quality Report

About this event

The University of Iowa invites you to join Iowa's water experts for an encore presentation of findings from the Central Iowa Source Water Research Assessment (CISWRA) report – a groundbreaking scientific study that provides the most comprehensive analysis of water quality in the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers to date.

This historic event will feature a distinguished panel of scientists who were directly involved in creating this landmark 227-page assessment, offering attendees unprecedented access to the researchers behind this critical work. This event is free but registration is required.

Event Schedule (subject to change)

  • 5:30: Doors open
  • 6:00: Welcome and introductions
  • 6:15: Prepared remarks from CISWRA researchers
  • 7:00: Questions from the audience - Moderated by Erin Jordan, Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication
  • 7:20: Call to Action
  • 7:30: End

Don't miss this opportunity to hear directly from the scientists whose research will shape Central Iowa's water future for decades to come. Hear directly from members of the team of 16 scientists who conducted this two-year, $1 million research project. These leading researchers from across the United States and Iowa will present their findings on:

  • Water quality conditions in the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers
  • Sources and impacts of pollution affecting drinking water for 600,000+ Central Iowans
  • Scientific recommendations for improving source water quality
  • Implications for public health, recreation, and economic development

Interactive Q&A Session

Engage with the scientific team in an open dialogue about the study's methodology, findings, and recommendations. This is your opportunity to ask questions directly to the experts who spent over 4,000 hours analyzing the data that affects our region's most vital resource.

The CISWRA Project was commissioned by the Polk County Board of Supervisors in 2023 to provide an unbiased, comprehensive analysis of our region's source water quality. This collaborative effort represents one of the most thorough scientific assessments ever conducted on Central Iowa's water resources.
