Piano Sundays returns for the 2025-26 season! The University of Iowa School of Music, in partnership with the Old Capitol Museum and West Music, is proud to host this annual tradition.
Performances are held in the beautiful Old Capitol Museum Senate Chamber this year, performed on their historic, rebuilt Steinway grand piano “Rose.” This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to see and hear the university’s talented piano students and faculty in a distinguished building that serves as a center for history and culture.
Today’s performance features Rene Lecuona, Tammie Walker and Studios.
Rene Lecuona is professor of piano at the UI. She has been praised by critics in Germany, the UK, and the US for her chamber music interpretations and solo performances: “The imagery of the music is perfectly conveyed by Vogel and Lecuona in an inspired performance… this is chamber music at its best” (www.klassik.com); “As throughout the entire album, Lecuona’s performance is magnificent…” (David Murray: Bass World); “Lecuona’s interpretation of Mozart was outstanding…” (Daily Iowan).
Lecuona earned a doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance and was awarded a performer’s certificate at the Eastman School of Music. She received undergraduate and master's degrees at the Indiana University School of Music.
Tammie Walker, director of the School of Music and professor of piano, is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she earned the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees as a student of Ian Hobson. She became director and joined the UI School of Music faculty in July 2019.
An active solo and collaborative pianist, Walker has performed in hundreds of concerts throughout the continental U.S., Hawaii, western Europe, and South Korea. She is an active clinician, lecture-recitalist, and masterclass teacher, including presentations at regional and national conferences and several virtual international invitations.
This concert is free and open to the public.
