Bur Oak Land Trust has announced its final planned hike of the year and you’re invited!
Join Conservation Director Carter Johnson to explore O'Mara-Newport Woods, a Bur Oak preserve not typically open to the public. This is a small, 30-acre wooded area just north of Iowa City adjacent to Rapid Creek. The property consists of rolling hills that include about 5 acres of mature white oak forest cover, about 24 acres of developing young hardwood forest cover (red oak, black walnut, white ash, and black cherry), and a 1-acre pasture.
In the early 1970s, only five acres were in forest cover, but now some of the valuable upland hardwood forest that had been significantly reduced in Johnson County is returning on this property. Come experience the new growth in this hardwood forest that Bur Oak has spent many hours restoring.
Please wear sturdy shoes for walking the trails and bring your own water. There are no restrooms at O'Mara-Newport Woods.
Specific location and driving directions to the site will be provided to registrants via email.
This event is free thanks to sponsorships from Grout Electric and Martin Construction.
