Collaboration, Community & Craft

About this event

The Iowa City Public Library invites you to “Collaboration, Community & Craft,” hosted by Katie Roche, Director of the ICPL Friends Foundation and a musician with the Awful Purdies and the Dandelion Stompers. This event is part of the Iowa City Songwriters Festival, taking place throughout Iowa City Sept. 4-6.

The panel features leadership from the Family Folk Machine — Jean Littlejohn (Artistic and Executive Director), Alma Drake (Associate Director and veteran songwriter with a 50-year career), and Nicole Upchurch (Director of Kids’ Curriculum and musician with the Feralings and the Awful Purdies). Together, they’ll share insights on building musical community through intergenerational collaboration and creative process.

Unlike traditional choirs, Family Folk Machine works with its members to shape original songs into choral arrangements, empowering songwriters and celebrating collective creativity.

Enjoy coffee, juice, and pastries while learning how this beloved Iowa City group weaves song, connection, and craft into its work. Learn more at https://familyfolkmachine.org/.
