About this event

During the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, Iowans were leaders of nationwide religious campaigns for progressive social change. The State Historical Sociate of Iowa invites you to join presenter David Mislin to explore Iowa churchgoers' efforts to wed their faith with activism for the environment, in support of family farmers, and on behalf of marginalized communities, and to examine the legacies of these efforts in the 21st century.
David Mislin is a historian of the 19th- and 20th-century United States, with a focus on American intellectual, cultural, and religious history. He is the author of Saving Faith: Making Religious Pluralism an American Value at the Dawn of the Secular Age (Cornell University Press, 2015). He also contributed chapters to Faithful Republic: Religion and Politics in Modern America (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015) and The Lively Experiment: Religious Toleration in America from Roger Williams to the Present (Rowman & Littlefield, 2015). His journal articles have appeared in the Journal of the Historical Society, Religion and American Culture, and Church History: Studies in Christianity and Culture. Since 2014, he has taught in the Intellectual Heritage program at Temple University.
The Iowa History 101 webinars share Iowa stories and the history of the state through a cultural history lens on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Registration is required for each event and to receive a link to the recorded program.
