Author talk with Marybeth Slonneger: “What Was, What Remains”
About this event

The Iowa City Senior Center invites you to join Marybeth Slonneger as she talks about her latest book, What Was, What Remains, Volumes 1 and 2, based on years of research on lost and existing homes from the beginning of Iowa City through the turn of the century.
When possible, a historic photo contrasts with the present-day home, highlighting positive and negative change. After preliminary history, Volume 1 begins at Benton Street and goes alphabetically through Evans Street. Volume 2 takes begins at Fairchild Street and ends with Woodlawn.
Special topics like tower homes, oculus windows, decorative pediments, roof ornaments, and complicated porches are discussed throughout the 1,100 pages. Names of 573 original homeowners and builders are indexed at the end of each volume; more than 1,500 photos provide a visual image of our city and possible reference for future owners. The books were researched, designed, and laid out by the author in two small editions of 200 copies each. Signed copies are available for those interested.
Register online or call the Senior Center at 319-356-5220.
