About this event
OWLS – which stands for Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors – is a series of outdoor and nature-education programs sponsored by Johnson County Conservation. These events are designed for people 65 years and older, helping participants connect with one another while enjoying the outdoors and some light physical activity.

Join Johnson County naturalists for a one-mile hike along prairie trails, and discover the magic of the Ciha Fen Preserve, an 80-acre sand prairie/savanna complex on a wind-deposited sand ridge. The Ciha Fen is one of only two documented remaining nutrient-poor fens – a form of wetland – known in the state of Iowa, and contains numerous rare plant and animal species.
Participants should expect to walk over some sloped and uneven terrain along the way, and through some short-grass prairie vegetation. Along the way we'll stop to soak in the views, share ecological details, and make sure everyone is comfortable with the pace.
